Discussing chemicals & Waste Global Agenda ahead of UNEA4 & SAICM OEWG Meeting

Geneva is a global hub for chemicals & waste sound management governance. We are convening a briefing on chemicals and waste ahead of the Fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA4, in Nairobi 11-15 March), and the Third Meeting of the SAICM Open-Ended Working Group (Montevideo, Uruguay 2-4 April 2019), which will take place at the International Environment House on 26 February 2019.

The briefing will also provide an update on the preparations for the 2019 meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, as well as on the Mercury Convention intersessional work.

 

40th session of Human Rights Council Environmental agenda

The 40th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC40) starts this week in Geneva. Various events discussing environmental-related issues will take place during this four-weeks session (follow live on UNTV).The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment will present his report on the right to breathe clean air (A/HRC/40/55 available online).

 

UN-EMG Nexus Dialogue on Sustainable Infrastructure for the SDGs

The UN Environment Management Group (UN-EMG) Nexus Dialogues are a series of events centered on discussing the interlinkages between certain environmental issues in the context of the wider SDG arena.

This Nexus Dialogue aims to contribute to a common understanding on the centrality of infrastructure to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and foster support by both public and private stakeholders for the application of an integrated approach to the planning and development of infrastructure.
 

 

World Wildlife Day 2019

World Wildlife Day will be celebrated on 3 March 2019 under the theme “Life below water: for people and planet", which aligns with goal 14 of UN Sustainable Development Goals. In Geneva, a special event to mark the day will take place at Palais des Nations on 1 March, and will highlight the contributions of the international community in Geneva to ensure sustainable use of marine species.

 

Inger Andersen elected as Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme

Following her nomination by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, the General Assembly on 20 February elected Inger Andersen of Denmark to a four-year term as Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Serving as Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 2015, Inger Andersen brings a passion for conservation and sustainable development with more than 30 years of experience in international development economics, environmental sustainability and policy-making, as well as in designing and implementing projects and generating on-the-ground impact from working with a small Non-Governmental Organization in Sudan to multilateral and international settings with a constant focus on poverty eradication. Inger has held various leadership positions at the World Bank and United Nations.
