Wetlands: Natural Solution for Reducing Carbon Emissions

World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February. The day marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar, and aims at raising global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and our planet. Wetlands and Climate Change, the theme for 2019, draws attention to the role of wetlands as a natural solution to cope with climate change, one of the most pressing problems facing humanity and our planet.

In Geneva, the celebration of this important day will take place on 31 January, at the World Meteorological Organization, with a discussion aiming at highlighting wetland conservation and restoration as a sustainable solution for climate action. The event will also address the opportunities and share examples of practical steps countries can take to include wetlands as part of their Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

This event is coorganized by the Geneva Environment Network Secretariat and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization. Kindly register online.

Convening of the Governing body of UNECE environmental activities

UNECE's work on environmental matters dates back to 1971, when the group of Senior Advisors to the UNECE Governments on environmental issues was created, which led to the establishment of the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy (CEP) in 1994.  CEP is the overall governing body of UNECE environmental activities. See the programme and side events on UNECE website.

Claiming More Climate Action

Inspired by Greta Thunberg, young people are once again organizing climate demonstrations around the world on 2 February, including in Switzerland. In Geneva, a march will start on Place des 22 Cantons, at 2pm.
